National prize for Design 2007

The National Design Prize 2007, which is being organized biennially by the Slovak Design Centre and the Ministry of culture of the Slovak Republic, has its winners. In the 8th year of the national design competition, two national design prizes were awarded to professionals  – in the product design and communication design categories, two prizes of the minister of education of the Slovak Republic in the students’ product and communication design categories, and ten acknowledgments in no concrete order or categories. Audi, the general partner of the competition has awarded the Audi prize for design to a young designer. Furthermore, the ministers of the respective resorts have awarded special prizes – the Special prize of the ministry of economy of the Slovak Republic to a company, which systematically applies design in its corporate strategy; and the Special prize of the minister of culture to a professional for his lifetime activities in the area of design.

On the 28th and 29th of June 2007, an evaluation of the eighth year of the National prize for design took place in Satelit, the information point of the SCD in Bratislava. The international jury evaluated all 127 entries in the categories of product, communication and students’ design. The members of the jury were Massimo Pitis, a graphic designer from Milan, Lenka Žižková, a theorist of design and curator from Prague, and the Slovak graphic design experts -  the graphic designer and lecturer at the

Academy of fine arts and design in Bratislava - Stanislav Stankoci; the designer Bjorn Kierulf; designer and lecturer at the University of technology in Bratislava Peter Paliatka; the designer Martin Struss; the architect and designer Júlia Kunovská; designer and lecturer of the University of technology in Košice Tibor Uhrín;the theoretician of design and lecturer at the AFAD Zdeno Kolesár and the director of the SCD Katarína Hubová.

In the category of product design (31 entries) the strongest most entries were  accepted in the area of design related to lifestyle (glass, toys, garment and sport accessories) and furniture. The participation of five machines brought forward the tradition of industrial machinery. There were four Slovak designers who took advantage of the openiness of the competition towards increasing imternational relations and who designed products for companies abroad. In one case , the situation was reserved – a design studio from abroad was working for a Slovak company

From the final number of 43 participating communication designs, 19 applied to logos or corporate identities. An interesting fact is that 21 projects, which is almost 50%, applied to cultural institutions or projects.

Winning products presented at the exhibition in Bratislava held in October and November 2007.
All entries published in the NPD 2007 catalogue.
